Holding Back the Tide - 2023

Director of Photography

New York City was once the oyster capital of the world, now specter of this bivalve haunts the city. While volunteers restore them to the harbor, this hybrid documentary celebrates oysters as queer environmental icons. Oysters were, and are, quintessential New York. Holding Back The Tide is a city symphony of urban and aquatic landscapes that follows the precarious ebb and flow of oysters across their lifecycles. Our story is guided by initiatives that close the ecological loop all over the city and beyond.

We celebrate this bivalve as an under-sung hero cleaning up the waterways and protecting the coastline. As we connect NYC’s vitality with the teeming life below its water, we ask: how can something the oyster build toward the future in the face of looming climate disaster? How much are we willing to invest in our cities’ longevity?

Altitudes - 2022

In different corners of the city, New Yorkers contend with the effects of rising sea levels and increasingly extreme storms. In the Bronx, high school students build green roofs to absorb record rainfalls. Throngs of activists take to the streets of Midtown Manhattan to demand immediate climate action. In low-lying parts of Queens, scientists invent new ways to capture and disseminate vital flood data. And in Brooklyn, toxic sludge is extracted from the depths of one of the filthiest waterways in the country for scientific analysis. Filmed during spring of 2022,  Altitudes documents a city’s piecemeal response to the rapidly rising waters that surround it.

This short film was co-directed and produced at UnionDocs Collaborative Studio Program 2021-2022 where I worked with other artists to further our research practices and the documentary form

The film was selected to be part of Labocine’s October 2023 issue (art)ificial 2.0.
